WINELANDS
A land of rolling hills, mountainous backdrops, historic towns and plentiful estates, the wine lands are truly a sensory delight. Wine routes are available which weave between estates in a particular region. The oldest and most renowned is Stellenbosch. The town still resembles the Dutch village that settled it in 1657. Many of the buildings are national monuments and antique shops and cafes fill the streets. Some of the finest examples of Cape Dutch architecture are to be found here. Stellenbosch is synonymous with good wines and there are 23 estates on the wine route. Franschoek, the valley of the French Huguenots lies further in the mountains and classic wine types are found here. From rich whites to fruity reds and most farms readily welcome visitors for tasting or lunch. Enjoy some sublime French cuisine as you gaze around the picturesque valley. Durbanville, is more recently on the wine scene and lies closest to Cape Town. With the cool Atlantic breezes, this climate is excellent for white wine making and the Sauvignon Blanc wines are proving so. Don't forget the town of Paarl, home to Paarl Rock which you can climb up. All areas offer their own unique experience of the wine lands. After a day on a route, spit or swallow will determine if you walk or stumble home.
