THE NAMIB DESERT
Home to the highest dunes in the world, at about 300meters, this vast landscape of orange dunes, asks us a question. What can survive in this seemingly inhospitable region? Plants and animals alike have adapted to this unique environment - most notably the Welwitschia. An adult consists of two leaves, a stem base and roots. That is all! These two leaves never fall off, they continue to grow and grow with an estimated lifespan of 400 to 1500 years! The majestic Gemsbok has managed to survive here and can be seen near the area of the Sossusvlei (Dead Vlei). This clay pan in the middle of the Namib is accessible by road. Leave your shoes and climb the surrounding dunes. The older the dune, the brighter its color, due to iron oxidization. Take some card board with you and race down the steepest part, sand spraying and all smiles. Savor the colors and shapes of the beautiful landscape but make sure you leave the park before closing time.
